Some talks on Australian Scholarships

Many of us want to go for higher studies in Australia. It would be great if we can come to Australia with scholarships

External Scholarships

There are a large number of external scholarship options. Please encourage students to visit www.jason.edu.au to learn more. Scholarships can be searched on this national database by discipline and/or funding type. A searchable list is also available from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) website at http://searching.qut.edu.au/search/search.cgi?collection=cms-scholarships&meta_2_and=research

Living Allowance Scholarships (offered through QUT)

The following are stipends to cover living costs during candidature:

(1) Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

http://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships-and-prizes/australian-postgraduate-award-apa
Open to domestic students and international students (in receipt of an International Postgraduate Research Award (IPRS)) who can demonstrate Honours 1 or equivalent.

(2) QUT Postgraduate Research Awards

http://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships-and-prizes/qut-postgraduate-research-award-qutpra
Open to International and Domestic students with Honours 1 or 2A or equivalent.
These awards are funded by QUT at same rate as the APA.

Fee Scholarships

Domestic Students

All domestic students are usually eligible for either a Research Training Scheme (RTS) or equivalent QUT funded tuition fee scholarship to study a research degree at QUT. There is no need to apply, students are assessed on admission. Exceptions would include students completing a second award at the same level in the same discipline or students who have expended the two year maximum for Masters research and four year maximum for doctorate by research candidates and been unsuccessful in obtaining an extension.

International Students

(1) Tuition Fee Waiver

International students will be considered against the following criteria for a fee waiver as part of admission or on application during candidature:
1. Eligibility for admission to a course;
2. Not currently in receipt of a tuition fee scholarship from any other source;
3. Commencing students must be in receipt of a living stipend to the value of minimum $18,000 per annum from any source (supervisor’s grants, School, Faculty, companies, etc.) except private funds;
4. Continuing students:
(a) upon timely completion of Stage 2 and Confirmation of Candidature milestones and
(b) who are in receipt of a living stipend to the value of minimum $10,000 per annum from any source (supervisor’s grants, School, Faculty, companies, etc.) except private funds;
5. To be eligible students must be enrolled in fulltime mode. Part time students are not eligible for tuition fee waiver.
Requests for tuition fee waiver come to Research Students Centre from the student supported by their supervisor and faculty nominee (e.g. Head of the relevant School/ Director of Higher Degree Research or equivalent of the relevant Faculty or School) as agreed by the Faculty Scholarship Officer. Based on Faculty support the final approval sits with the Dean of Research and Research Training.

(2) International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

http://www.innovation.gov.au/Research/ResearchBlockGrants/Pages/InternationalPostgraduateResearchScholarships.aspx
These awards are for international students and are allocated on the basis of academic performance. They cover tuition fees; health cover and the health cover costs for dependents. Recipients of this award are eligible for consideration for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA).

Other Scholarships

(1) Grants in Aid

Each faculty is provided with funds by Research Degrees Committee to support students undertaking study related travel during candidature (e.g., to attend and present at a conference; to visit a key resource or facility). Students must apply and compete for funding to their faculty in most cases. Some faculties have incorporated these funds into the student’s allocation to support them during candidature. Normally a student would need to seek funds from a range of sources to cover all costs. The University funding would only support a limited number of students for air fare costs.

(2) Write up scholarship

http://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships-and-prizes/qut-write-up-scholarship
The supervisor and faculty may support students applying for up to 3 months APA equivalent funding for a student to complete publications or thesis corrections after they have lodged for examination. Where the student does not meet the outcomes stipulated in the application at the 3 month point the faculty is liable for all costs.

(3) Completion of Award IELTS testing (Phased out during 2011)

Student may apply for funds to cover the cost of obtaining an IELTS (English language) score on completion of their award. Contact the International Administration Officer, Mrs Lois McLaughlin (l.mclaughlin@qut.edu.au), for further advice.

Thesis Editing for International Students (Available up to the end of 2012 when it will be reviewed)

Students may apply through their faculties for funds to support thesis editing prior to lodgement for examination. Funds would be conditional on a demonstration of the student’s commitment through candidature to participate in English language development programs. Speak to your Faculty Research Administration Officer for further advice.

Scholarship Round

QUT has one scholarship round per year in September/October. Commencing and continuing, international and domestic students are welcome to apply. Each scholarship is awarded based on a student’s performance against:
(1) Undergraduate GPA (or equivalent for those who completed studies more than 10 years ago)
(2) Honours equivalence score
(3) Faculty score
The scholarships offered are the APA, QUT PRA, IPRS and tuition fee waiver awards.

Out of Round

Depending on the availability of funding commencing and continuing students may be considered for scholarships out of round. The only awards likely to be available out of round due to budget constraints are the APA (for domestic students with Honours 1 equivalence and IPRS holders) and tuition fee waivers (for international students who can show they have obtained a living stipend). Normally continuing domestic students meeting confirmation requirements would be eligible for Honours 1 equivalence. This would then make them eligible for an APA. Thus they would either be allocated one or be transferred from a PRA to an APA. Reallocation to an APA effectively frees up one PRA award to be allocated to a non Honours 1 holder and/or an international students.
